Salary negotiation case study
You’re searching for your first full time job after leaving school or university. You’ve been searching for employment for six months.
Your friend tells you that her employer is hiring for a position in the field you studied. You decide to apply, and Human Resources contacts you for an interview.
On interview day, you meet with HR first and then the hiring manager. When you prepared for the interview at home, you had in your mind a fair annual salary that you expected.
You don’t know the salary the company is offering, and you don’t have access to any sources to give you that information prior to the interview.
During the interview, the hiring manager reveals to you what the salary is.
They think you’re qualified for the role and want to hire you. You’re also interested in the position and want the job, but the salary is $10,000 less than the amount you want to get paid.
